C.-MAXIMA
C. maxima. Turban squash. Oblate fruit is red-orange in color and has prominent warts and slight ribbing. Lighter peach coloring scattered around outside. The rind is incredibly hard and not easy to cut. Fruit measure 5.5-10.5" long, 7.5-12" in diameter, and weigh up to 18 pounds. Thick flesh is dark orange in color. Poor flavor. Dry matter content 8.12%; BRIX reading 6.8. Large sprawling vines. Moderately productive when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Susceptible to powdery mildew. Donated to SSE in 1983 by Tom Knoche (OH KN T) via Glenn Drowns (IA DR G). This variety has been available to American gardeners since at least 1880 when it was offered by such seedsmen as J.J.H Gregory (Marblehead, MA) and E. Fred Washburn (Boston, MA). It was developed by Aaron Low of Essex, MA as a cross between the Turban and the Hubbard. SSE Accession # 119848
