Waldoboro Greenneck

Single Image
VEGETABLES / RUTABAGA
Bicolor roots with green tops and light yellowish-white bottoms. 1-1.5lbs at maturity. Elliptical shape. Quite a few lateral rootlets. Roots are mostly buried. Cream colored flesh. Nice, sweet flavor. Brassica napus. a.k.a. Cambridge Turnip. Neil Lash (ME LA N) acquired this variety in Waldoboro, ME in 1992 and it's been distributed through the Medomak Valley Heirloom Seed Project. The original turnips of this variety were reportedly washed ashore from the wreck of the "Cambridge" steamship which ran aground in 1886 off the coast of Port Clyde, ME. This accession was previously distributed by SSE incorrectly as a turnip, but botanically, it is a rutabaga. SSE Accession # 127672
