VEGETABLES / CUCUMBER
Short, pale green to white fruit. White spines on prominent bumps. Superficial ribbing. Fruit become light yellow at seed maturity. Market mature fruit measure 3.2-4.3" long by 1.3-2.2" wide and weigh 2-6oz. Seed mature fruit reach 4-7" long by 2.4-2.9" wide. Standard flavor. Very crunchy texture. Thin skin. Pale green flesh. Mid-season maturing. Average productivity when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. SSE member Dr. James Wolfe (TN WO J), received this variety in 1994 from Kathleen Fields, a daughter of the Hurd family. Dr. Wolfe was told this cucumber had been grown by the Hurd family of Hancock County, TN for more than 100 years. This potentially dates the variety to the 1890s. Dr. Wolfe started offering the variety in the 2000 SSE Yearbook Exchange, commenting that he was rogueing out green fruit that were endemic in the variety when he originally received it, but now thought he had eliminated those genetics.
