VEGETABLES / ONION
            TOPSET-MULTIPLIER
Egyptian tops set onions are suitable for green onions (spring & fall). AKA Walking Onions. Perennial. Small bulbs the first year get larger in successive years. Bulbs divide at the base like large shallots. Bulbs overwinter, even here in Vermont, and are best harvested or divided to replant in the following spring. Onion sets also form on a stalk, often making new stalks that make sets, and even a third. Top sets and bulbs form in 3-6 clusters. Unharvested top sets fall to the ground or stalks take them to the ground, where they root. Even tiny bulbs on the 3 rd iteration of top sets germinate. I’ve used them a stakes to mark the beginning and of rows of other crops. They fit in with polycultures, taking very little space. Sometimes the initial cluster of sets on a stalk also produces flowers. I’d like to get seeds from such flowers to play with genetic diversity. Please email if you have them. $10 for minimum of 10 sets from the first cluster (they are larger than the others but not large) plus assorted small sets to produce green onions for 1 st year harvest. Email first to confirm availability.
