3 lb. Coffee Can

According to Seed Savers Exchange, Diane Ott Whealy (SSE Cofounder) received this variety from an Ohio gentleman. She says in her memoir, Gathering; "A few years earlier, a gentleman had sent me a three-pound Folgers coffee can full of seed. He said the plants were always grown from a seed and rivaled any commercial variety, but they came to me with no name. His claim was true. These plants were eventually transplanted to a patch in front of the barn at Heritage Farm and 20 years later have developed into a magnificent bed. One good thing about growing older: your asparagus patch gets better." 2025 was my 3lb. coffee cans second year growing. I have yet to have harvested any to eat but was pleasantly surprised that in 2025 my asparagus produced lots of red berries which contained plenty of viable seed! This variety seems to be hardy and quick growing. In Missouri my first asparagus spears started coming up in late March.
