Ice Cream Melon

Small, ovate fruit are pale yellow with dark yellow stripes at maturity. Some fruit retain patchy green mottling. Fruit abscises easily from vine when ripe. Rind is soft and breaks easily. Smooth rind, though some are lightly netted. Fruit reach 3-5" long by 3-5" in diameter and weigh 0.6-1.6 lbs. White flesh has unique, pear-like texture. Grainy, soft flesh is not very juicy, but melts in your mouth. Moderately sweet. May be a good choice for sorbet. Seeds are firmly embedded in dense flesh. Mid-season maturing when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Margie Kauble (CA KA M) sometime in the early 1980s. Kauble had received the variety a short time earlier from a friend who obtained it through Sunset magazine. SSE Accession # 112926
