VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
HEAD
Yellow-green butterhead. Leaves are fairly tender, but dry and slightly bitter to slightly sweet. Difficult to harvest as leaves are packed together tightly and folded on each other. Obovate leaves are highly blistered, slightly toothed, and highly wavy. Plants form round loose heads. Leaves 4.75-5.75" long and 5.2-6.65" wide. Market mature plants 4.75-6" tall and 8.3-10.6" in diameter. Brown seeded. Mid-season maturity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Charles Hoehnle, an Amana descendant. This variety was grown in the communal kitchen gardens of the Amana Colonies in eastern Iowa from the mid-1800s until 1932 when the communal way ended. It's been maintained by individual families like Hoehnle's since then. Formally known as the Community of True Inspiration, this group originally immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1842 and settled in New York state before coming to Iowa ten years later. Traditionally served with a creamy dressing containing chopped boiled egg. This variety was previously distributed by SSE under the misspelled name 'Eiersalaat (Egg)'. SSE Accession # 112172
