French Marigold

FLOWERS / MARIGOLD
Original marigold seeds came from a self seeding short variety, probably Bonanza. I let the seedlings grow and have since been selecting ever since for heights of 2-3 feet, good full branching, mildew resistant foliage and double flowers. This year I added seeds from plants grown from seed given to my niece by a woman who had sold her a piece of furniture - one of the seedlings had a wonderful red flower with a thin gold picotee edge. This mix is full of variation from singles to doubles, yellows and oranges and reds. I have been trying to separate the colors, growing orange in one garden, reds in another, and yellows in a third. But my main garden has everything mixed together and that's where these seeds originate. Despite my low key efforts to rogue out the singles, those seem to be hardier than the doubles so I always end up with them as well. I've tried to mix seeds evenly from mother plants of all three colors. More reds in the mix than in the picture. Very colorful and lovely cut flowers, bright and cheerful in the garden. Self sow in zone 6a.
