FRUITS-BERRIES-NUTS / QUINCE
Organic Listing
Quince is a 12' to 15 ' shrub like tree that produces fruit that looks like a cross between a pear and an apple. I grew this from seeds that I got from a lady in Alexander, NY. It needs no other tree to pollinate it, but once you have Quince, more is better! I send 25 seeds. Even though not all will make it to maturity, it's still more trees than most people can handle. Plant in a sunny location, well drained soil. Adding organic matter is always better as it retains moisture and adds nutrients. I always recommend caging trees and shrubs if you live in any area where critters could be a problem (who doesn't)? Keep it well watered until well established. It will withstand drought once established. In the early stages of growth, the fruit will have a dark greenish black fuzz. This is normal and most of it comes off with rain. Just rub off any remaining bits. I can include a recipe for Quince 'cheese' aka Quince paste, if you want it. This is very popular in Europe for charcuterie boards. Other names for this condiment are Membrillo (Spain), Marmelada (Portugal), or Cotognata (Italy). Quince just left about the house will impart a lovely rose fragrance everywhere. I include growing instructions with each order for everything I offer.
