Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John Withee purchased this variety from RH Shumway seed company. Shumway had offered a variety by this name in their catalog beginning 1934 until at least 1975 with the same description. According to William Woodbridge Tracy Jr in 'American Varieties of Garden Beans' (published in 1907), the name Speckled Cranberry "…has been common use since about 1855.” SSE Accession # 100960
