VEGETABLES / BEAN
UNSORTED-BEANS
Pole. Snap bean. Green beans are long, flat, and slightly curved. Pods have great flavor and are very tender, even when fully expanded, although they do develop a strong suture string. Pods, up to 5-6" long, contain 6-8 seeds. Seeds are white and oval to cuboid-shaped. Dry beans also have a very nice flavor. Strongly climbing plants. White flowers. Average productivity when grown in 2016 and 2023 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John received this variety from Silas Gilliam of Virginia in the late 1970s. Silas stated in his donation letter that he acquired this variety from his great uncle Frank Grizzle in the late 1960s where previously it had been grown for years in Tennessee. Silas referred to this variety as his family’s heirloom bean. SSE Accession # 101502
