VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-BUSH
Bush. Snap bean. Plants 7-11" tall. Leaves green, stems green with some sparse purple streaking. Dark pink flowers. Pods green with strong purple blush when flat, yellow with purple stripes and blush at shelling stage, leathery-podded when dry. Pods are round cross-section, straight to slightly curved, with medium, downward curving beak. Mature pods 3.5-4.5" long, 0.4" wide. Very good as a snap bean when flat, with good flavor and texture. Slightly fibrous but still okay to eat when fully expanded. The snap bean of choice for Heritage Farm wildlife in 2013--its pods suffered predation when no other bush beans near it did. As a shelling bean, dry, firm, bland. 5-7 seeds per pod. Seeds gray with purple mottling wash, dark stripes and dashes. Dry beans have a thicker skin and require a slightly longer cooking time. Mild flavor. Early maturity when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by L.C. Hubble (TN HU L), whose family grew this variety since circa 1945. They originally received it from Ed Marshall of Bradford, Tennessee. SSE Accession # 104222
