VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-BUSH
Half-runner, dry bean. Some people have described it as a bush bean, but we found it too viney to grow without support. Pods flat and wide with 4-7 large, brown, blocky, irregularly-shaped seeds. Unusual seed shape. When cooked, beans have a smooth texture and earthy flavor. Very thick, chewy skin. Medium-low productivity in 2020 at Heritage Farm. White flowers. Mid-season. Sue Robishaw (MI RO S) shared this bean with SSE in 1996. She described it as a family heirloom that was given to her in 1994 by David Peterson of Elderon, Wisconsin. David said the beans were brought to the U.S. from Scotland circa 1765 and grown near Schroan Lake, New York until 1888 when the beans were brought to Elderon, WI in 1892. David's great-great-grandfather, Hiram Murdock, was one of the past seed stewards. SSE Accession # 104426
