Catawba, Phil Hewitt's

Donated to SSE by Diana Sammataro, neighbor of the late Phil Hewitt (CT HE P, d. 1980) of Litchfield, Connecticut. Diana received the variety from Phil's sister after his passing and knew Phil would want it shared with SSE. It was first offered in the 1978 SSE Yearbook Exchange by Phil Hewitt, who at that time had been stewarding this variety for over 40 years. Hewitt believed it to be the historic commercial variety 'Earliest Catawba' which was developed by Rev. J.E. Tinker of Rock Stream, New York and introduced by W. Atlee Burpee in 1909.
