Dark red-purple onion. A few bulbs are nearly black. Slightly flattened globes. Bulbs 2-3 inches tall, 3-4 inches wide. White flesh with red rings. Very pungent, slightly sweet. Long day. Medium-tall, fairly thick, blue-green tops. Tops are somewhat prone to falling over prematurely. This accession matches the description of Wethersfield Large Red listed in Field and Garden Vegetables of America, 1863. SSE Accession # 133562
