Cucumis anguria. Not a true cucumber but used similarly. Plants produce hundreds of small, prickly fruit which are tender when young. Mild cucumber flavor, moderately bitter, slightly sweet, crisp. Historically used for pickling. Fruit are pale green, oval shaped and 1-2" in length. Plants are highly sprawling with lobed leaves. Also known as West India Burr Gherkin, this variety was introduced to the US via Jamaica in the late 1700s. Will not cross with the common cucumber. Prefers hot, humid weather.
