VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
LEAF
Deer's tongue lettuce. Compact plants form an attractive rosette of dark green triangular leaves. Leaves curl down and fold upward at the midrib. Plants 6-9" tall, 10-12" wide at market maturity. Largest leaves 7-9" long, 4-5" wide. Black seeded. Later bolting when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. A staff favorite for taste in 2015. Excellent flavor and texture. Tender leaves with a crisp midrib are very sweet and not bitter. This variety was donated to SSE by Ella Jebousek in the late 1980s. Ella indicated that she had been growing the lettuce since at least 1984. She also said it was passed on to her "by accident" and was originally from someone's grandfather who had brought it to the US from Czechoslovakia. Ella also shared this variety with the Abundant Life Seed Foundation who offered it several years during the late 1990s and 2000s under the name 'Jebousek'. SSE Accession # 111584
