Perry's Flower

Single Image
FLOWERS / COSMOS
Cosmos sulphureus. Vibrant, fluted 1.5–2" golden-yellow blooms. Fast to flower, prolific, and highly vigorous. Plants average 3.5' tall. A pollinator favorite! Susceptible to lodging; support with twine and t-posts if desired. Excellent for craft use, retaining color when pressed. In the early 1990s, Perry Halse of Decorah, Iowa, noticed an unusual specimen of ‘Diablo Cosmos,’ a variety of Cosmos sulphureus, in a flowerbed at Luther College where he worked as Groundkeeper and Gardener. Unlike the others in the bed, this specimen had tubular petal flowers that caught his attention. The petals resembled those found in ‘Cosmos Sea Shells,’ which is a variety of Cosmos bipinnatus. Intrigued, he saved the seeds from this unique specimen and spent several years growing and selecting for tubular petals. Now, the variety he has developed consistently produces these tubular petals when grown. Perry donated this variety to SSE in 2023. SSE Accession # 133983
