Looseleaf with beautiful red-speckled leaves. Some variation in degree of speckling. Inner leaves have a light red tinge in addition to speckling. Large, spatulate leaves are smooth and glossy. Fair eating qualities. Leaves are slightly to moderately bitter and not very sweet. Leaves are somewhat thick but still relatively tender. Largest leaves measure 7-9" long by 5-6" wide at market maturity. Plants reach 8-9" tall by 11-14" wide. White seeded. Mid-season maturing. An Austrian heirloom whose name translates as "Speckled Trout Back." SSE Accession # 111789
