VEGETABLES / TOMATO
PINK-PURPLE
Large, flattened dark pink fruits, measuring 2.6–3.3" long and 3–5" wide. Average weight is 13.8 oz, with some reaching up to 21.5 oz in 2025 at Heritage Farm. Fruits have a moderately to deeply depressed stem end and have a fair tendency to retain green shoulders. Typically 1–4 fruits per cluster. Indeterminate plants with dense, attractive potato leaf foliage. Smooth, balanced texture. Great for sandwiches. Mid-season maturing. Marian Syrjamaki-Kuchta (1945-2024) of Duluth, Minnesota, began stewarding this variety around 2005 after receiving seeds from her friend and former co-worker at the University of Minnesota Duluth, Charlotte Mahai. Char and her husband, Robert Mahai (1940-2022), first planted the variety in the mid-1980s after Robert’s cousin, William Jakubek (1921-1993), gave them two seedlings. It has been in their garden for nearly four decades. Bob passed away in 2022, but as of 2025, Char continues to grow it. According to the Mahais, William initially got the tomato from his friend Anthony Joseph Debruzzi (1917-1993) of Comstock, Wisconsin, in the mid-1940s. Marian donated this variety to SSE in 2022.
