Smooth, green, spear-shaped leaves. Long leaf petioles. A wilder type of spinach with an erect growth habit and central stem. Very quick to bolt even if planted in fall. Spiny seeds. Leaves are quite tender and have a mild flavor. Donated to SSE by William Woys Weaver (PA WE W) who acquired this variety from the Arche Noah seed bank in Austria. Weaver described the variety as a very old, medieval variety. SSE Accession # 119700
