Leaf beet. Does not form a bulb, but rather a triangular taproot that enlarges late in the season. Dark purple-red leaves and petioles; leaves are spear-shaped and slightly undulating/spiraling. Small leaves, averaging 6-9" long and 1-2" wide. Long, dark purple taproot. Leaves have slightly bitter flavor; tender; not sweet; slightly chalky. Taproot is very sweet; thin skin; slightly coarse texture. Donated to SSE by Gordon Brown (CA BR G) who originally acquired it from The Cook's Garden circa 1992. Described by The Cook's Garden as a Scottish heirloom. SSE Accession # 106447
