B. napus. Siberian kale. Sweet, tender leaves with good texture. Leaves are green with moderately undulating margins. Purple-green stems, petioles, and leaf midribs. Largest leaves 16-18" long by 7-8" wide. Plants 1.5-2" tall and 2-2.5" wide at market maturity. Low degree of lodging and high plant uniformity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Shane Murphy (CA MU S) who received this variety from the Irish Seed Savers Association. It was given to Irish Seed Savers in 1993 by Charlie Hughes of Lankill farm in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. Hughes had grown it since the 1930s, but his father, Owen Hughes, started the tradition of growing the variety after receiving it from a neighbor who had brought it to Ireland from America.
