HEAD
Butterhead. Leaves are green with a light red blush and heavily blistered. Forms a loose head. Good flavor, low bitterness, slightly tough leaves. Plants reached 6-7" tall and 10-12" wide in 2016 planting at Heritage Farm. Bolted relatively early. White seed. Donated to SSE in 2014 by Mary Daniels of St Peters, Missouri who received the variety in about 1957 from her parents, Daniel and Elizabeth Crader. Family lore states it has been grown in the family since Mary's great-great-great-grandmother, Margaret Greter (surname later to become “Crader”) brought seeds to America in 1719. Margaret Greter emigrated from Germany with her children after the death of her husband, Jacob, and settled in Salford Township, Pennsylvania. SSE Accession # 132357
