Fordhook Gem

An all around outstanding melon. This green-fleshed, nutmeg type melon is early maturing, prolific, and has a sublime flavor. Fruit are tapered at both ends with a lacy netting. 6 inches long by 5 inches wide and weighing 2 pounds. Rind blushes yellow when ripe and fruit slip from the vine. Green flesh has a salmon patina. Juicy, sweet, melting, and aromatic. A true gem. Introduced by Burpee in 1967, this is a cross between two historic varieties, Netted Gem and Extra Early Knight. A favorite of SSE member and author, Amy Goldman, who shared this variety with SSE in 2018. SSE Accession # 133574
