Zona Upchurch Goose

VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Fat pole snap bean similar to Ohio Pole (both Appalachian) but has smaller seeds, about 60/ounce, and ripened with much less rotting than Ohio Pole in a damp October. See also Melungeon bean. Seeds 1/2x1/4x1/4" and pod 4-5x1/2x1/2" (dry). 5-6 seeds/pod. Fine purple speckles concentrated at one end of the cream seed. Matures starting early October (120+ days) but fairly productive some years (with average first frost Oct 21 but can be Oct 7). 14 seeds/plant in 2017 but 60 seeds/plant in long hot 2014 (both in part-shade). Doing okay in 2021 but most not ripe by mid October. Best in full sun and/or longer season. Hard to shell, tough and leathery. Some seeds are twice the size of others. Zona Upchurch is or was a woman who grew these. 2 year germination 100%, 4 year 70%, 5 year 30%. 25 2021 seeds.
