Purple Hull Whippoorwill

Slightly vining, indeterminate cowpea that produces 5.5-8.5 inch green and purple pods. Fruiting stems have an average of one pod per stem with 11-12 seeds per pod. vigor is slightly below average. Variable base seed color that ranges from dark brown to light tan. The variety was donated to SSE by John Coykendall (TN CO J) of Walland, Tennessee in 2008. John Coykendall is a Tennessee native and has stewarded seeds and documented oral histories from the American South, specifically in Washington Parish, Louisiana for over forty years. John got this bean from Joel Bullock (b. 1936 d. 2020) of Knoxville, Tennessee. The seed is believed to come from Walthall County, Mississippi circa the 1860’s. SSE Accession # 129487
