Irish Grey

Elongate fruit, light green rind with small green speckling. Uniform in appearance and somewhat uniform in shape. Fruit are 5.5-9.0" long, 4.0-5.5" wide, 1.5-5lbs. The 2013 HF watermelon plot had fertility problems and produced undersized fruit. Thin rind, 0.3-0.5" thick. Pink flesh. Moderately sweet. Medium-large seeds are white with a tan tip. Average number of seeds. Early maturity, intermediate productivity when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE in the early 1980s by Lawrence Gladfelter who purchased the seeds from Willhite Seed Co in the 1950s. It is an historic commercial variety known to date to at least 1920.
