VEGETABLES / PEA
SHELLING
Soup or shelling pea. Traditionally used in the United States as a shelling pea but originally bred as a soup pea. We found the shelling peas to be a bit starchy with fair flavor. Seeds are small, round, and blue-green, hence the name. Dry peas were soft, moist, and smooth but a bit mealy. Pods are green, straight, and up to 3' long. 5-8 peas per pod. Two pods per peduncle. Vines are short, little more 2' tall. Medium productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Prussian Blue pea is an old variety that grows to about 3 feet high. This accesstion matches the description of Prussian Blue listed in Field and Garden Vegetables of America, 1863. It's unclear from whom SSE acquired this variety. It was reportedly collected in Ethiopia. SSE Accession # 114830
