Plants form a well-developed, circular, solid head. Plants 4.75-6.25" tall and 9.8-11.8" in diameter. Later bolting when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Tender variety has relatively thin leaves. Black seeded. This variety is not the same as the historic variety by the same varieties are white-seeded. However, it does match descriptions to the historic varieties Shotwell's Brownhead and Palatine aka Brown Cabbage. Mrs. Dortha Carey of Walton, Indiana shared this variety of lettuce with SSE in 1982. She had raised it for many years, but by then Dortha was 76 years old and decided it was time to pass the lettuce on to someone who would preserve it and enjoy growing it as she had. This variety was grown by her grandmother who shared it with Dortha's mother. Dortha speculated that the lettuce may have come from Germany. SSE Accession # 111432
