Canestrino di Lucca

VEGETABLES / TOMATO
RED
~70 days, red piriform plum, indeterminate, regular leaf. Early and high yielding sauce tomato whose name translates to "little basket from Lucca." Fruits have a very old-world look, with a bottom-heavy shape, pinched shoulders and accordion-like ribbing. Green/yellow color remains on shoulders when ripe and deep radial cracks are common near stem attachment, but adds to look. Frequently hollow inside with low-moisture content, but flesh is smooth, meaty and sweet, not dry. Cooks down into a rich, deep red sauce that is very delicious. Appears to grow well in field or greenhouse. Acquired from a farmer in NY, who said it was collected in Italy by a chef he works with. Limited quantity. Seeds grown in 2016.
