HEAD
Butterhead. Variation in degree of heading, from loose to compact. Dark green, round leaves with a heavy red tinge. Moderate surface blistering and slightly undulating leaf margin with small teeth at base. Largest leaves average 5.7" long by 7.4" wide. Standard eating qualities. Crisp texture, moderately bitter. Black seeded. Acquired by SSE from Jim Lacitignola who received the variety from Francis Randolph in about 1970. The original plant was reportedly found going to seed along the South Fork Trinity River in California by an old homesteader circa 1920. SSE Accession # 111430
