VEGETABLES / CORN
DENT
Dent corn. An impressive specimen of a corn. Large white kernels are packed tightly on the ear in 14 to 16 straight rows. Large ears are 6-8" long and about 2.25" in diameter. There is about a 3 to 1 ratio of white to red cobs. There some variation in amount of hard and starch endosperm. Plants have very large tassels and very large leaves. Plants have big thick green stems and are up to 12.5' tall. Later tasseling when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE in 2014 by Elmer Burns, who has grown the variety since about 1978/1980 when he received it from Clinton Mobley of Oneida, KY. SSE believes this is an example of the historic variety of the same name. Author M.L. Bowman in "CORN: Growing, Judging, Breeding, Feeding, Marketing" (pub. 1915) wrote that it was developed by three Johnson County, IN farmers who combined their individual breeding projects in 1899 into what became known then as 'Johnson County White Dent'.
