VEGETABLES / SORGHUM
Historically listed in the Exchange as a sweet sorghum. In 2013 evaluation at Heritage Farm we found it only slightly juicy and not very sweet. However, over the years many listed members have praised this variety for its syrup. Seeds straw colored, plump. Seed interior ranges from partly corneous to mostly starchy. Red glumes cover half the grain. Panicle compact, elliptic. Plants 8.5-10' tall, 0-4 tillers per plant with 2 most common. Plants mostly green with localized red pigment. Midseason maturity. No lodging when grown at Heritage Farm in 2013. Given to SSE by David & Donna Phillips (IN PH D). This is a sweet sorghum they acquired from Kent Whealy in 1985. Kent first listed it in the 1980 SSE Yearbook Exchange. This variety is from the Whealy's neighbor, Herb Covey, when they lived near Princeton, MO. Herb got it from a Mennonite man near Jamesport, MO who ran a sorghum mill. SSE Accession # 119290
