VEGETABLES / TOMATO
RED
This variety is often listed as being the same as Wayahead, but per the Jung/Zondag family, they are not the same. When growing them together in the same field, this variety has significantly smaller fruit and a different shade of red than the Wayahead. It also takes an additional 7-10 days to bear fruit. It was offered for only a few years in the catalogs (in the late 1920s and early 1930s, per the family). The plants produce many 3-5 ounce fruits that are round and bright red. Nice 'old fashioned tomato' flavor, thin skin. In our garden, we have jokingly called this the "rain gauge" tomato. If we receive up to an inch of rain, there will be a cracked ring around shoulders. If we have between 1 and 2 inches of rain, there will be 2 cracked rings round the shoulders. Great for a conversation topic when the neighbors visit! Regular leaves, semi-determinate. About 75 days to maturity after transplanting.
