Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John Withee acquired this variety from the R.H. Shumway seed company. A 1938 winner of the All American Selections silver medal, Shumway advertised this variety in their 1940 catalog with the synonym 'Commodore' as an absolutely stringless and prolific snap bean.
