Pole, snap bean. Attractive pods are green with purple stripes when immature. Very good flavor, especially when pods are larger. Juicy, fleshy. Weak suture string. Pods are straight or slightly curved; long beak; pubescent. Fully expanded pods 6-9" long; 0.6-0.8" wide. Mature pods yellow with vivid, dark purple stripes. Shelling (horticultural) and dry beans have good, slightly sweet, earthy coffee-like flavor and soft texture. Shattering dry pods. 4-7 seeds per pod. Seeds large; beige with brownish-purple mottling and faint grey mottling. Non-pigmented vines; leaves green; very large. Light purple flowers. Low productivity; late maturing when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received the variety in 1978 from Ralph Stevenson who had obtained it from bean collector Burt Berrier of Canon City, CO. Berrier indicated that it originally came from Portugal.
