VEGETABLES / MELON
Uniform, green, elongate melon that is meant to be eaten in its immature stage (when fruits are 4-8" long). At that stage the melons are dark green with lighter green vein tracks and have a peach fuzz covering that can be peeled off. Flavor is green, rather immature tasting and not sweet. Supposed to be eaten with salt. Moderately vigorous growth and productive plants. Fruits do not abcise from the vine when ripe, they have a low cracking tendency, thick very soft rind and had a BRIX score of 6.3 when grown at Heritage Farm in 2020. Seed mature fruits are not very good for eating and are between 10.5-12 inches long, 5-6.5 inches wide and 4.5-7.5 pounds. James Smith of Springfield, Wisconsin had grown and stewarded this variety for about 10 years when he shared seeds with SSE in the 1990s. James received it from an Italian lady who had carried them with her when she immigrated to the United States from Italy in the 1950s. James described the flavor as something between a cucumber and a muskmelon. He like to eat them plain or with salt, while his wife prefers them with lemon juice and sugar. SSE Accession # 113746
