VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Pole/snap. A good snap bean; sweet and juicy with very good flavor; virtually stringless when young. Very productive; plants are very vigorous, lush, and strongly climbing. White flowers. Green, slightly curved pods measure 5-6" long and 0.4" wide. Solid yellow mature pods. 7-8 seeds per pod. Medium sized gold cuboid seeds. This bean variety was donated to SSE in the mid 1980s by Rose Skarin of Iowa who received it from Allen and Ada Ekstrum of Stratton, Nebraska. Allen and Ada grew this bean all their married life. It's originally from Ada's grandmother, who homesteaded near Stratton in a sod house with her three children after she was widowed. That first fall of 1888, she harvested these beans from the garden of an abandoned homestead across the road where someone had "given up and gone back east." The Ekstrum family used this variety as a dry bean. SSE Accession # 102659
