Benefine

Cichorium endivia. Frizee-type with highly dentate margins. Great as a baby green in my gourmet salad mix. This plant loves the cold, and pests (including slugs) seem to ignore it. Seeds are normally very difficult to save. However, with a bit of natural retting (rotting), seeds come free with a vigorous fingernail scratch across the top of the softened calyx. Seeds will include some chaff.
