Cornfield Fall, Red Seeded

Pole, dry bean. Seeds are small, round, and dark red, resembling a cherry pit. Strong but pleasing earthy flavor; excellent texture. Pods are green, straight, and 4-4.5" long; 0.5" wide. 4-7 seeds per pod. Plants are strong climbers. Pink flowers. Medium productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Mid to late-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John received this variety from Silas Gilliam of Virginia in the late 1970s. Silas got this bean from Sally Deel of Virginia in the early 1970s. Silas included that this variety is traditionally cooked in large kettles with fat back and served with corn bread. SSE Accession # 101514
