VEGETABLES / PEPPER
SWEET
Capsicum annuum. Sweet pepper. Fruits elongate, slender, straight to strongly curved, bright red when ripe, mostly 5-6" long, thick-skinned, few-seeded, maturing faster than a bell pepper. Plants compact, 2' tall, productive. Flowers white. Grown by Regina Santore in 2021 for the Collection Documentation Project; she described the flavor as "slightly fruity." SSE received this variety circa 1983 under the name 'Long Slim Italian' from Exchange lister Jasper L. Compton (OH CO J) of Beaver, Ohio. He acquired the variety in 1982 from fellow lister John Rahart (WY RA J) of Saratoga, Wyoming, who confirmed it was the 'Jimmy Nardello's' sweet pepper being shared in the Yearbook. Rahart received the variety in 1981 from Jeana Sirabella and Thomas Crissinger (NY SI J) of Elmont, New York, who introduced it into the SSE Yearbook circa 1980. At that time, they indicated the pepper had been grown by Jimmy Nardello's family for over 100 years in the U.S. (SSE estimates since at least 1880).
