Benewah

Benewah (Idaho 21). Ultra-early tomato from A. A. Boe’s short-season breeding program at the University of Idaho, Moscow. Released together with Santa and Gem State for cool, short-season areas (HortScience 15:536, 1980). Pixie Hybrid x Sub-Arctic Midi. Regular leaf, good leaf cover. Slightly flattened red fruit, 6–7 cm (about 2½ in.), similar to the Sub-Arctic types. Semi-determinate, viny, sprawling grwoth habit; grows as a small, bush-type plant that lays relatively low to the ground to protect itself from cold winds. Highly resistant to cracking and exceptionally well-suited for high-altitude or northern gardens where night temperatures drop significantly. Possesses a classic, well-balanced tomato flavor with good juice content, making it perfect for fresh salads, slicing, and home processing. USDA PI 636304. SSE Tomato 480, SSE accession 121885
