VEGETABLES / CORN
POPCORN
SSE received this variety from of amateur corn-breeder Ernest Strubbe (b. 1915, d. 1986) of Alberta, Minnesota, likely in the mid-1980s. Ernest's interest in breeding began in 1929, and over the decades, he developed many selections of vibrantly-colored dent corn - every color was on display in Ernest's home. Ernest did not specifically comment on how he developed the ‘Red Popcorn,’ but generally speaking, all his breeding started with the ‘Black Beauty’ variety and many were developed over decades of selection. SSE co-founder Kent Whealy, also described Ernest as a wildlife artist, photographer, ornithologist, and conservationist.
