POPCORN
David Gunzenhauser of Humeston, Iowa, received this popcorn from his neighbor Howard Lee Garton, who had obtained it from David’s uncle, Ernest “Ernie” Moser, in the mid-1970s. David has stewarded the variety for about a decade, though family tradition holds that the seed may have been in the Gunzenhauser family since at least the 1930s. David originally believed Ernie had received the corn from David’s grandfather, John Peter Gunzenhauser, whose family moved from Iowa County to Wayne County around 1910. After reconsidering the history, however, David noted that Ernie traveled widely among local farms through his poultry business and might instead have acquired the seed from one of his customers, leaving its exact origin uncertain. David believes he is currently the variety’s sole steward, though his nephew Bob Gunzenhauser has expressed interest in continuing it, and Bob’s daughter planned to grow it for a 4-H genetics project. David donated this variety to SSE in 2023.
