VEGETABLES / PEPPER
HOT
C. baccatum. Fruity flavor followed by a pleasant, lingering heat. Flesh is crisp and juicy, with thin to medium walls. Fruits hang pendant on the plant and mature from green to bright red, developing a semi-wrinkled, elongate shape that tapers to a pointed tip. Average fruit size is 3.5–4.5" long and about 0.8" wide. Plants are erect and moderately branched, reaching 4.5 to 5' tall, with green stems and leaves. White flowers with a yellow-green basal zone. High vigor and good tolerance to cool weather and light frost in 2025 at Heritage Farm. Late-season maturing. Paul “P.J.” Klinger of Winter Garden, Florida, has been stewarding this hot pepper variety since 2004, from seeds he got from a neighbor in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida, who had recently moved from Sarasota County. He claimed to have discovered the pepper growing wild in an orange grove. P.J. highlights that the pepper shows strong cold tolerance, having survived temperatures as low as 28°F without sustaining damage, and it is resistant to nematodes, which pose a significant threat to pepper plants in Florida. He adds that it is a very prolific self-seeder. P.J. donated this variety to SSE in 2024.
