VEGETABLES / COLLARD
Large, smooth, dark green leaves with a glossy sheen.
Obovate leaves have a light green midvein and an entire to undulating margin. Plants 20.5-26" tall and 27-46" in diameter. Significant pest resistance compared to other collard varieties grown in the same field in 2023.
NOTE: In 2023, with a population of 24 plants, 4 offtype blue-green plants with high leaf bloom and white petioles were present. Ken, the original seed donor, saw a mixture of dull and glossy plants and selected for the glossy types. If planning to save seed from this variety, rogue any dull plants before they flower. Due to the genetics encoding the greasy gene, however, it is challenging to remove non-greasy plants, and they may be part of the variety indefinitely. This collard variety was donated to Seed Savers Exchange in 1992 by Exchange lister Ken Ettlinger (NY ET K). Ken had purchased the seeds in 1990 at a small seed store/hardware store in South Carolina. The first time that Ken grew the variety, he observed that about 80% of the plants had greasy leaves.
