VEGETABLES / SQUASH
C.-MAXIMA
C. maxima. This is a big, cheese-shaped squash with moderate ribbing and a corky rind in a concentric pattern, varying in coverage. The color of the rind ranges anywhere from white to cream to slate, with different intensities of green and blue. The flesh color is anywhere from a medium-dark orange to a light orange and is 2-2.5" thick. The rind is very thick and hard to cut into. During the 2021 planting at Heritage Farm, productivity averaged 1.7 marketable fruit per plant, though they are very large, 5-6" in height, 12-14" in diameter, 17-24lbs, and there were a significant number of unmarketable fruit per plant. The flesh is sweet and not too dry or stringy. This variety was donated to SSE in 1985 by member and Exchange lister Michael Maltas after he received the variety from his mother in Zimbabwe. Michael’s mother had sent him several varieties, but to his dismay, most were American commercial varieties, except for ‘Flat White Boer’ which Michael indicated is South African.
