Immature fruit have green, netted stripes which fade with maturity but sometimes persist towards the stem end. Fruit rind tends to develop cracks near the stem end at maturity. Pale yellow-orange flesh. Grown for large, edible seeds. Flesh has poor texture and flavor. Mature fruit measure 1-2' long and 6-9"" wide at the bulbous end. Fruit weigh 10-20 lbs. Plants are strongly vining. Entire leaves. Soft hairs. Mid-season maturing. Fruit kept one month in storage in 2013-2014 at Heritage Farm. Given to SSE by George Cox (WI CO G) who acquired the variety in 1987 from Claude Brown of Pikeville, KY. It was grown by Brown's family since at least the 1920s and is reminiscent of the variety which Cox's own family used to raise during that same era. SSE Accession # 119743
