LEAF
Looseleaf. Resembles butterhead but does not form a head. Leaves have extensive, dark red pigmentation. Strong blistering of leaf surface with an undulating margin. Plants reach 7-9" tall and 12-16" in diameter at market maturity. Good flavor with a sweet aftertaste. Excellent texture. Early maturing when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Black seeds. Acquired by SSE from Will Bonsall (ME BO W), but originally introduced into the SSE Yearbook Exchange by John Small (AR SM J2) in the Plant Finder section of the 1983 Yearbook. This variety was grown by Small's parents who acquired it from Small's great uncle, Dr. Joseph Bremer, a country doctor in Point Cedar, AR. Dr. Bremer and his wife grew the lettuce since at least the 1930s. SSE Accession # 111539
